Activist-Astrologer Fundamentals

Activist-Astrologer Fundamentals is a self-paced course that teaches students how to begin learning their birth chart and how to use this specific astrological information to design an activism project. Beginning to learn astrology on your own can feel like being placed in front of 10,000 scrambled puzzle pieces on the floor without the reference picture for what the completed puzzle will look like. You have no clue where to start, you don’t know what you don’t know, and the sheer volume of new information is overwhelming.

You could choose to proceed by randomly selecting pieces of astrology information to learn and hoping you’ll find its matching piece from the sea of the other 9,999 pieces. Or you could streamline your astrology education by approaching it strategically, utilizing the insights of the astrologers who have walked this path before you. One of the most important ways of beginning to sort this puzzle is identifying where you currently are on your astrology learning journey and where you’d like to go.

Let’s map out the entire Astrologer’s Journey in terms of proficiency levels of mastering the birth chart (in general terms, how your specific journey unfolds may be different!):

Proficiency Levels:

Level 1: Familiarity

You know astrology goes beyond Sun signs. You’re beginning to gain familiarity with signs, houses, and planets as 3 distinct spheres of knowledge, but you haven’t begun integrating them yet. You’re not able to say what a planet in a sign in a house means at this point in your learning journey. (About 2 months from beginning the learning journey)

Level 2: Comprehension

You know the difference between signs, planets, and houses without having to look it up. You have a working knowledge of each individual piece (Aries – Pisces), (House 1 – 12), (Sun-Pluto), and you’re beginning to make meaning out of a planet in a sign in a house placement as a singular unit of information. But you don’t have a big picture understanding of your chart yet. (About 3 months from beginning the learning journey)

Level 3: Practice

You are beginning to experience your chart as an integrated whole. You have a “feel” for your chart, understanding which parts of it are the most important and which parts are more secondary. Although you’re strongest at reading your own chart as you’ve spent the most time with it, you can also look at other people’s charts. But understanding other people’s charts requires a significant amount of time, effort, and a heavy reliance on guidebooks and cookbook interpretations as this is a new skill. (About 1 year from beginning the learning journey)

Level 4: Usefulness

You can read birth charts for personal pleasure without having to use a guidebook for every interpretation of a planet-sign-house placement. You have a felt sense for people’s charts when you look at them and can identify which planets are the most important within each person’s chart. (About 2-3 years from beginning the learning journey)

Level 5: Mastery

You can do professional birth chart readings and innovate new ways of approaching astrology (About 4 years from beginning the learning journey)

Activist-Astrologer Fundamentals is designed to carry the complete astrology beginner through to Level 2. So, you’ll learn how to make your birth chart, cultivate a working knowledge of the main parts of a birth chart (the signs, the planets, and the houses), and interpret a planet in a sign in a house as a singular piece of information. This allows you to fully develop a strong astrological foundation to work from if you’d like to continue on the astrology learning path. Approaching astrology this way is like being handed the 10,000 puzzle piece box with the reference photo on it, alongside the handy tips of sorting the puzzle pieces by color and isolating all the edge pieces first.

This course is also written with quite a bit of Gen Z humor, for the young and young at heart. Anyone with a spirit of play and laughter will enjoy the course. Interactive in nature, this course features many experiential exercises for you to have an embodied sense of the most important placements in astrology.

In addition to this more traditional approach to astrology, this course is also for those with either an interest in or experience with activism. As self-described “Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet” activist Audre Lorde says,

“Each of us must find our work and do it...It means actively working for change, sometimes in the absence of any surety that change is coming.”
Audre Lorde

We will be using our birth charts as a tool to uncover what “our work” is and design activism projects inspired by a placement within your birth chart. Along the way, we will be using the activist work of numerous Black activists like Audre Lorde, Angela Davis, and Kimberlé Crenshaw astrologically to better understand how their work can inspire and influence ours.

This course also astrologically explores the work of activists from around the world, such as those making protest songs during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, books in honor of the children who died while fleeing Syria, and stories/films naming the irrevocable violence done to Japanese children as a result of American bombings. We will also cover how you can use your birth chart for a specific prescription on how to combat feelings of burnout and exhaustion as activists. Taking this course will leave you with a solid astrological grounding in both how to begin speaking the language of your birth chart and how astrology can be utilized as a change-making activist tool.

Although the course is self-paced, if you have 3 hours to devote to the course content each week, you’d complete the course in 3 months and successfully complete level 2 on the Astrologer’s Journey. You’ll have access to the online content until the end of Apr 2023 (1 year from now at the time of writing), so you can move through the content as quickly or slowly as you prefer.

Testimonials

Is astrology just another form of egocentric navel-gazing? It can be! But if you are interested in both astrology and in changing the world, I highly recommend the course of study offered by the Revolutionary Astrology School. The curriculum offers values which are so often missing from mainstream astrological offerings – a sense of community and a corresponding sense of social responsibility. Practical pointers about personal growth abound, but in these teachings, we never lose sight of compassionate engagement with the suffering of the world, nor our sense of how we might empower ourselves to actually do something about it.
